MY WARNING TO EU LEADERS: SANCTIONS MUST NOT PUNISH FREE SPEECH

Recently, I wrote to Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, the President of the European Council, the Foreign Minister, and the EU’s High Representative to express my serious concerns about the EU’s practice of sanctioning private individuals for their opinions.

The listing of analysts such as Jacques Baud—without any criminal conviction—raises fundamental questions about freedom of speech, due process, and respect for the rule of law in the European Union.

Sanctions must not become a tool to punish dissenting views. Human rights and free expression must be upheld—without exception.
